Energy storage and conversion

Within the scope of energy supply energy storage applications becomes more and more important. Since 25 years rechargeable Li ion batteries have been applied successfully in a wide range of electric devices. We deal with the development of active materials via different synthesis routes (precipitation with or without hydrothermal treatment or mixed oxide), the electrode preparation, including slurry preparation and casting by different techniques like tape casting or freeze casting. A further issue is the assembling of test cells In order to characterize new materials or processing steps. Also the ageing of commercial cells under different conditions is investigated in terms of micro structural aspects as well as electrochemical changes during battery life. In order to support the interpretation of the results of non-destructive characterization methods like electrochemical impedance spectroscopy cells are opened and characterized post mortem. The focus is on electrode degradation processes.
